Senior Citizen Property Tax Exemption
To qualify for the Senior Exemption for tax year 2024, the property owner must have been born prior to or in 1959, owned the property during 2024, and used the property as his or her principal place of residence in 2024.
Applications open early in Spring each year. This exemption automatically renews each year. For more information please see this link: Senior Exemption.
Senior Sewer Exemption
The Senior Citizen Sewer Exemption allows eligible seniors (65 or older) who own and live in their homes with separate metered water service (or a separate city water assessment) to be exempted from paying the sewer portion of their utility (water/sewer) bill.

Senior Citizen Garbage Fee Discount
All seniors who own a single family home and receive the Cook County Senior Tax Assessment Freeze will automatically qualify for this and the discount should be applied to their utility bill. No application needed!
Benefits Check Up
The Chicago Department on Aging uses Benefit Check Up to determine if seniors may be eligible for more than 70 city, state and federal benefits including Energy Assistance, Financial Assistance, Housing, Transportation, Health, Legal, and more.

To use the service go to BenefitsCheckup.org and complete the online application, or call 312.744.4016 to speak to a specialist from the Illinois Department on Aging.
Senior Freeze Property Tax Exemption
To qualify for this exemption in property tax year 2024, the property owner must be over 65 years of age and have had a total household annual income of $65,000 or less in 2023.

Applications open early in Spring each year. This exemption DOES NOT automatically renew, so you must re-apply every year. For more information please see this link: Senior Freeze Exemption.
Senior Sewer Rebate
The Senior Sewer rebate applies to senior homeowners who do not qualify for the Senior Sewer Exemption because their property is a townhome, condominium unit, or cooperative apartment that shares a common water bill.

This provides an annual $50 rebate in lieu of the exemption.

Senior Well-Being Check
If you know a senior who you believe is in need of a well-being check, please call our office or 311. This triggers a team of human service specialists to make an assessment of the senior's needs.
Department of Family Support Services
The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services is here to help residents in need from birth through the senior years. They provide a variety of resources and services for Chicago residents.
