Alderman Samantha Nugent

Alderman Samantha Nugent was elected to serve the 39th Ward in April of 2019. Since her time in office, she has become a proven champion for education, public safety, infrastructure investments, and attracting businesses to the ward. 

 

From playground updates and public art installations to large-scale expansion projects, President Pro Tempore Nugent has led over $40 million in investments in neighborhood schools. She has secured more officers in the 16th and 17th Police Districts, as well as advocated for additional intelligence resources to address public safety issues. In the past three years, she has simplified the zoning and development process for businesses while still prioritizing community input. President Pro Tempore Nugent works closely with the 39th Ward Chambers of Commerce to find new funding sources and to keep our businesses open and thriving. In all her work, President Pro Tempore Nugent centers on transparency, consensus, and proactiveness. She prioritizes communication with all city partners to ensure the city is working for and with her constituents.

 

As the former Vice Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Protection and Energy, she wrote legislation to reduce single-use plastic use by restaurants and worked to protect the 155-acre North Park Village campus through a conservation easement.

 

Now, as President Pro Tempore of the Chicago City Council, she works to build consensus among her 49 other colleagues while advocating for issues that impact the entire city. Her duties include presiding over the City Council in the absence of the Mayor, serving as a member of all standing committees of the City Council, and overseeing the Legislative Reference Bureau - a team of lawyers who work on behalf of all Alderman.  Additionally, she serves on the Aviation, Budget and Government Operations, Contracting Oversight and Equity, Rules, Ethics and Government Oversight, Police and Fire, Special Events Cultural Affairs and Recreation and Transportation Committees.

 

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Connecticut and her Juris Doctor from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

 

Alderman Nugent serves the far northwest side communities of Albany Park, Brynford Park, Budlong Woods, Edgebrook, Forest Glen, Gladstone Park, Hollywood Park, Indian Road, Mayfair, North Park, Old Irving Park, Peterson Park, Sauganash, Sauganash Park, and West Walker.
