The 39th Ward is proud to host over 100 block parties every year. Below is information about Block Parties in the City of Chicago and our permit application form.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I have a block party?

Most residents plan block parties on weekends from late spring to early fall, but permits are available year-round. The earliest time that a permit can begin is 8:00 am, and the latest end time is 10:00 pm.

When should I apply?

We encourage you to submit your application at least 30 days in advance as permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Our office receives a high volume of block party requests, which takes time to process. This will also allow plenty of time to plan your event and notify residents. Our office can supply “No Parking” signs once the event is permitted. Please give neighbors ample notice in advance of your street closure.

What are the City's rules regarding block parties?

  • Permits cannot be issued for arterial streets or bus routes.

  • Permits will not be issued for more than one day in succession or to close any street for a commercial purpose.

  • Permits can only be issued for a single block (intersection to intersection)

  • Access to any metered parking spaces must be maintained at all times.

  • Permits can also be denied for traffic control issues, public safety concerns, or issues related to other permits issued in the vicinity of the event.

How do we get the "No Parking" signs?

Our office will reach out the week of your party to confirm details and arrange for pickup of the "No Parking" signs.

How can we close the street?

A block party permit allows residents to close the block to traffic, but we do not provide barricades. Whatever you choose to utilize to block the street should be easy to move in case of an emergency.

Can I get a Jumping Jack for the party?

The City of Chicago provides free inflatable bounce houses on a first-come, first-served basis to block parties on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. Applications open in April and fill up fast! Inflatables will only be provided to residential block parties within Chicago city limits. Events on private property, parks, forest preserves, schools, libraries or churches, private parties, birthday parties, and festivals are not eligible to apply. Can I get a fire truck at our party?

Please let us know if you would like to have a fire truck at your party.  We are happy to submit a request for you. The Chicago Fire Department is never able to confirm their attendance, but they try to attend if their schedule permits and an emergency does not divert them.
