Housing and Tenant Resources

Affordable Housing Resources

Affordable housing resources can be complex to navigate, with no one portal or list containing all information. Linked below is the Affordable Rental Housing Resource List provided by the City of Chicago.

Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance

Chicago City Code outlines legal requirements for both tenants and landlords. The ordinance is aimed to improve the quality of housing across the City and outline remediation options if violated.

Chicago Housing Authority

The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA)  connects families across Chicago to public housing opportunities. It is the largest rental landlord in the City. For eligibility requirements and to place your name on the waitlist, see the link below.

Building Violations

Landlords are responsible for maintaining their buildings and units in a habitable condition. Building violations can be reported to the City. Please note, for most inspections they will need a resident's permission to enter the property.

Tenants may report violations to 311, or directly to the 39th Ward Office.

Renter's Rights

The Chicago Department of Housing has compiled information regarding the rights of tenants on their website, including resources for conflict resolution, information on rental rights and responsibilities, and more.

Metropolitan Tenants Organization

The Metropolitan Tenant's Organization (MTO) is a non-profit dedicated to tenant's rights and helping tenants to ensure their rights are protected. They can be reached on their website (linked below) or by phone at 773.292.4988.
